Most (not all) of the time our meals include a fruit & veggie. Doesn’t mean they always get eaten but it does mean that we normalize what is “kid food” and “kid approved”.

Question: Does the thermos keep the food warm until lunch?
Answer: Just so so, but my kid still eats it, so yes it works. 😉

I cleaned out the fridge today. Like really cleaned it. This is not Instagram worthy, wasn’t even wearing my nice leggings. But what if we celebrated the mundane a little more often? Would we learn to be less discontent with the necessity of it all. This doesn’t mean we have to like the never-ending pile of laundry, but attributing the deserved recognition to the everyday tasks it takes to keep ourselves and the ones we love alive certainly seems worthy of celebrating, at least a little more often.

There’s no other way to put this…life’s messy.

Two and half months after having RSV, Reagan is still having recurring resurgences of the virus. To make things probably worse and certainly not better, she has also been struggling with a pinworms infection. People I know have experienced heart breaking loss. My minivan’s trunk likes to open whenever it wants, and no one can figure out why.

I’m not telling you this because I want to. I don’t. I’m not telling you this because I have to. I don’t. I’m telling you this because behind all the photos, videos, and smiling faces in your life and online, there is mess. And if we aren’t careful, we might start thinking it’s just us.

Find yourself a real community that supports you in the middle of that mess and you in theirs. Even Jesus had a motley crew of 12.

Thanks for sending me this pic Marya. Here’s how she converted my Slow Cooker Vegan chili recipe (on the blog) to a stove top version with meat…

I used my dutch oven over medium heat and cooked some ground pork, half of a chopped onion, and a few cloves of minced garlic.

After I added 2 cans of light kidney beans, drained
2 14.5 oz cans of organic diced tomatoes
1.5 cans of water

then I diced up the carrots and added them
then the kale
then a bag of fresh butternut squash from trader joes
then a jar of salsa
then the spices: 1 & 1/2 tsp cumin, chili powder, paprika, dried oregano, 1 tbs salt

I let all of that cook on medium heat for probably 45 minutes. I had the top on it or it was slightly on it and let it boil.

Served it with fritos and some cheese and everyone loved it!

Healing is a journey. Sometimes physical, other times mental, and a lot of times both.

Almost 9 months post surgery, Reagan still ends up at the pediatrician’s office monthly for some reason or another. Thankfully, her kidney issues seem to be past us. 🙌 However, I feel the need to share because I want to reinforce the idea that a prolonged recovery process is unfortunately normal. Whatever normal is. I wish healing was a destination we happily arrived at one day, able to look back at the before and after with gladness that it’s over. While in a lot of ways we certainly can do that, in a lot of other ways we can’t.
That’s why it’s so vital to celebrate all the victories, large and small, along the way.
Most recently, Rea has been sleeping through the night without waking. 👏 This wasn’t an accident, as we have been seeing a therapist which helped provide us with tools to empower her and work through anxiety. I’m thankful we have opportunities I know others do not. But I’d be lying if I didn’t admit feeling defeated.
Walking Rea back into class after being out for a few days, another mom snagged me and said her daughter told her she hoped Reagan would be back soon because she protects her on the playground from a boy in another class. On my way out the door, another mom passed by and commented how her son was angry she hadn’t parked fast enough so he and Rea could walk into class together. These comments were a gift to me. A reminder that my girl is fierce. And if she can take on this journey, then so can I, and you can too, friend. 🙏❤️
